The Dunmow Flitch Trials Committee welcomes applications for 2012

The application process is now open for married couples wishing to be considered for entry into the 2012 Dunmow Flitch Trials, which will be held on Saturday 14th July 2012.

The historic trials – which date back to the 1100's - are held every four years and set out to award a flitch (or side) of bacon to married couples from anywhere in the world, if they can satisfy a Judge and Jury of 6 maidens and 6 bachelors that in 'twelvemonth and a day' they have 'not wisht themselves unmarried again'. Couples must have been married for at least a year and a day.

Application forms can be downloaded here. Applicants have until 29th February 2012 to submit their application.

We need more volunteers to help organise the trials. If you are interested, please contact us (don't worry if you've not done this sort of thing before or don't want a lot of responsibility, we need all sorts of help, even if only on the day).

› Become a Patron

As a Patron of the Flitch Trials, you will be helping to secure the future of this unique and ancient tradition. Every 4 years, the cost and complexity of putting on the Flitch Trials increases. With your support we can increase the network of people interested in preserving the custom and developing the event to ensure the Flitch Trials continues to be a mainstay on the town's event calendar.

The cost of becoming a Patron until 2012 is only £10.

In addition to helping secure the future of the Trials, as a patron you'll receive:

  • A souvenir programme
  • Priority purchase of 2012 Trial tickets
  • Voting rights at general meetings
  • Updates on Flitch news and events

To register as a Patron, please download and print the Patron's Application Form and return your completed form, together with a cheque, to the treasurer (detailed instructions are printed on the form).

› Become a Sponsor

The Flitch Trials are organised by a team of volunteers and we rely entirely on sponsorship and advertising in our programme for funds to stage this event. Any surplus is distributed to local charities and organizations after each event.

If you would like to sponsor a particular aspect of the Trials, or just give a cash donation, please contact us.
